#NEWS: 15 Suspected Illegal Miners Arrested as Security Agencies Raid Abuja Site

Security agencies in Nigeria have intensified their crackdown on illegal mining following a joint operation by the Nigerian Army and the Mining Marshals unit of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in the Kuje Area Council of Abuja.

The operation led to the arrest of 15 suspected illegal miners who were initially apprehended by the 176 Guards Battalion of the Nigerian Army in Gwagwalada before being handed over to the Mining Marshals for further investigation.

Authorities later conducted a joint inspection of the illegal mining site as part of ongoing efforts to tackle economic sabotage and environmental destruction linked to unlawful mining activities in the Federal Capital Territory.

Residents in the area had reportedly raised concerns over the growing dangers caused by illegal miners, including environmental degradation, insecurity, and threats to public safety within the community.

Speaking during the exercise, Assistant Commandant of Corps, Attah John Onoja, said the successful collaboration between the Army and the NSCDC highlighted the importance of coordination and intelligence sharing among security agencies.

He explained that the operation aligns with the security principles promoted by Ahmed Abubakar Audi, which emphasise cooperation, collaboration, and effective coordination to address national security challenges.

Following investigations, authorities confirmed that one Mohammadu Sani and 14 other suspects had been formally charged in court.

The latest development signals a renewed push by security agencies to dismantle illegal mining networks and restore order within Nigeria’s mining sector, as concerns continue to grow over the impact of illegal extraction activities across several communities.
