The Nigerian movie industry has been thrown into mourning following reports that popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo has died at the age of 40 after a private battle with cancer.
News of the actor’s passing surfaced on Tuesday evening, leaving fans and colleagues in shock as tributes continue to pour in across social media. According to reports, the award-winning actor had been quietly battling cancer away from the public eye for some time.
For months, many fans had questioned his absence from public events and social media, with his last major online appearance dating back to late 2024. While some of his close associates earlier assured supporters that he was doing fine, it has now emerged that the actor was facing serious health challenges behind the scenes.
Born Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke, the actor studied Law at the University of Calabar and also earned a diploma in Mass Communication. He first gained national attention after emerging as the first runner-up at the 2010 Mr. Nigeria competition, a breakthrough that launched his successful acting career.
Over the years, Alex Ekubo became one of Nollywood’s most recognizable faces, admired for his charisma, versatility, and stylish personality. He featured in numerous blockbuster films and earned praise for his performances, including winning the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award for his role in the 2012 movie In the Cupboard at the Best of Nollywood Awards.
Beyond acting, his personal life also attracted public attention, especially his high-profile relationship with American model Fancy Acholonu. The couple made headlines in 2021 after getting engaged and announcing wedding plans under the hashtag #FalexxForever.
However, the relationship later ended unexpectedly just months before the scheduled wedding, sparking widespread reactions online. Their breakup remained one of the most talked-about celebrity relationships in Nigeria, especially after several public comments made in the years that followed.
Since news of his death broke, fellow actors, filmmakers, and fans have continued to celebrate his legacy, describing him as a talented and kind-hearted entertainer whose impact on Nollywood will not be forgotten.
