Museveni Sworn In for Seventh Term as Uganda Marks 40 Years Under His Rule

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has been sworn in for a seventh consecutive term, extending his four-decade rule over the country.

The 81-year-old leader took the oath of office on Tuesday during a high-profile inauguration held in Kampala, where he received the ceremonial instruments of power in front of thousands of supporters gathered in the Kololo suburb.

The event was marked by a heavy military display, with Uganda’s army chief Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the president’s son and widely seen political heir, overseeing rehearsals of the parade in the days leading up to the ceremony. Russian-made Sukhoi fighter jets were also seen flying over the capital during the celebrations.

Museveni, who has now been in power for 40 years, used the occasion to call on Ugandans to embrace hard work and focus on building wealth, citing success stories of citizens who have improved their lives through entrepreneurship. “No more excuses,” he told the crowd.

While the president begins another five-year term, many Ugandans are increasingly acknowledging that his long rule may be approaching its final phase, though uncertainty remains over how a political transition could unfold.

Museveni’s continued leadership has made him one of Africa’s longest-serving heads of state, with his presidency shaping generations of Ugandans who have known no other leader.
