Former Senegal striker Mbaye Diagne has backed Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen as the player most capable of breaking his long-standing Turkish Super Lig scoring record.
Diagne currently holds the record for the highest number of goals scored by a foreign player in a single Turkish Super Lig season after netting 30 goals during the 2018/2019 campaign for Kasımpaşa and Galatasaray.
The Senegalese striker scored 20 goals in just 17 matches for Kasımpaşa before completing a mid-season move to Galatasaray, where he added another 10 goals in 12 appearances to set the historic mark.
Speaking about the record, Diagne said he would only be pleased if Osimhen becomes the player to surpass his achievement.
According to him, no player has managed to break the record since he set it, and he believes very few are capable of doing so.
“I’m very happy to still hold the record because I scored many goals in the league,” Diagne said in an interview with Turkish outlet Vatan.
He added that while several players have tried to match the feat over the years, he would only accept seeing Osimhen overtake him because of the respect and admiration he has for the Nigerian striker.
Osimhen has continued to impress since joining Galatasaray, scoring 15 league goals this season. Meanwhile, fellow Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu has also enjoyed a strong campaign, finding the net 22 times in the Turkish top flight.
