Kwara North Group Rejects Senator Umar’s Third Term Plan

The third-term ambition of Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar has run into strong opposition as a group within the Kwara North Senatorial District rejected his plan to seek re-election ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The resistance was made public during a press briefing held in Ilorin on Tuesday by the National President of the Patigi Emirate Development Union (PEDU), Salihu Bologi Umar, who expressed concern over the senator’s reported intention to return for another term.

The group maintained that Kwara North operates a long-standing zoning arrangement that allows political power to rotate among the various local government areas every two terms, and insisted that it is now Patigi’s turn to produce the next senator.

According to the group, allowing a third term would run counter to the principles of fairness, equity, and political balance that have helped maintain peace and unity across the senatorial district.

They emphasized that no single community should dominate representation, stressing that all constituent areas must be treated equally in the sharing of political opportunities.

Bologi urged political leaders, traditional rulers, youth groups, and other stakeholders across Kwara North to uphold justice, dialogue, and mutual respect to preserve political stability in the region.

He warned that denying Patigi Emirate its turn in the Senate race could force stakeholders to reconsider their political alignment and explore other democratic options that better reflect their aspirations.

The group further explained that the zoning system has historically helped maintain harmony among communities in Kwara North by ensuring rotational leadership after every eight years.

They concluded that, based on this understanding, the 2027 senatorial ticket should be ceded to Patigi Local Government Area in the interest of fairness and continued regional unity.
