Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said he will begin wide consultations regarding a possible return to the presidential race ahead of the 2027 elections.
Jonathan made the statement on Thursday in Abuja while responding to a group of supporters who visited his office to urge him to contest.
According to him, he has taken note of the calls but will first consult broadly before making any final decision on whether to join the race.
During the interaction, the former president emphasized the importance of patriotism, peace, and credible elections in Nigeria, stressing that national stability remains the foundation for development.
He noted that without peaceful and transparent elections, many responsible citizens may be discouraged from participating in politics, especially younger generations who are crucial to the country’s future.
Goodluck Jonathan also encouraged youths to remain actively involved in the democratic process, particularly by exercising their right to vote and advocating for peaceful elections.
The former president, who has previously observed elections in several African countries, described presidential ambition as a serious decision, noting that it should not be treated lightly.
He concluded by saying he had heard the appeal from his supporters and would engage in further consultations before making any political move regarding 2027.
