Supporters of former Zamfara State Governor Abdul’aziz Yari Abubakar have defended his political relevance amid growing criticism from some political figures in the state.
In a strongly worded statement, members of the Yari political family said they have deliberately avoided responding to what they described as provocative comments in order to prevent unnecessary political tension in Zamfara State.
According to the group, Senator Yari’s political approach has always focused on promoting peace, fairness, and political unity, even among rivals. They accused some unnamed politicians of sponsoring attacks against the former governor in an attempt to weaken his influence within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The statement insisted that Yari, popularly known as Marafan Sakkwato, remains one of the most influential political figures in Zamfara and continues to command strong grassroots support across the state.
The group highlighted his political achievements as former governor and senator representing Zamfara West, noting that his network and influence have continued to shape political activities within the APC long after leaving office.
They also praised Yari’s leadership qualities, describing him as humble, generous, and committed to the welfare of his people. According to the statement, his role has been crucial in maintaining unity within the APC during periods of internal crises and political uncertainty in the state.
The supporters further argued that political criticism should focus on governance and development issues rather than personal attacks or attempts to discredit political opponents.
They urged political actors in Zamfara to prioritise unity and collaboration in addressing key challenges facing the state, including insecurity, unemployment, poverty, and poor infrastructure.
The statement also highlighted several humanitarian and educational projects allegedly sponsored by Yari, including scholarships for thousands of students, support for secondary school students, and annual distribution of JAMB forms to indigent youths.
According to the group, the former governor’s philanthropic activities and long-standing relationship with the grassroots continue to strengthen his political standing in Zamfara State.
