Wike Blasts Professional Bodies, Says Constant Criticism Is ‘Destructive’

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has taken a swipe at what he described as “destructive criticism” from some professional bodies, urging them to shift focus from constant attacks on government to meaningful contributions that drive development in their sectors.

Wike made the remarks on Tuesday in Abuja while receiving delegates of the Body of Benchers, led by its Chairman, Chief Albert Akpomudje, during a courtesy visit at his residence in Life Camp.

The FCT Minister said leaders of professional associations should be judged by the legacy they leave behind in terms of reforms, projects, and infrastructure delivered to their members, rather than frequent media criticism of government policies.

He questioned the value of leadership that is defined mainly by public criticism, insisting that office holders must account for what they achieved while in position.

According to him, constructive engagement with government is more impactful than constant condemnation, adding that professional bodies should take advantage of opportunities to improve their institutions.

Wike commended the Body of Benchers for what he described as a more development-focused approach, noting that successive leaderships of the body have consistently engaged government on projects aimed at strengthening the legal profession.

He also confirmed that the Body of Benchers annex building being constructed by the FCT Administration is nearing completion and is expected to be delivered by June this year.

In addition, he disclosed that the access road linking the Nigerian Law School and the EFCC Academy corridor is about 98 per cent completed, while also approving a fresh request for the construction of an additional access road leading directly to the annex building.

Wike maintained that while criticism is a normal part of democracy, it becomes problematic when it ignores ongoing development efforts and focuses only on negativity.

He also defended government investment in infrastructure for judicial officers, arguing that providing better working and living conditions for judges strengthens institutions rather than undermines their independence.

Earlier, Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Chief Albert Akpomudje, praised the FCT Administration for ongoing infrastructural development in Abuja, particularly projects benefiting the legal sector.

He expressed appreciation for the annex building, road projects, and fire service station within the complex, describing them as evidence of effective governance.

Akpomudje also called for further collaboration between the legal profession and government, including improved water supply and more regular engagement with the FCT Administration to address institutional needs.
