#NEWS: Fugees Star Pras Michel Begins 14-Year Prison Sentence in Arizona

Pras Michel, a member of the legendary group The Fugees, has officially begun serving a 14-year prison sentence after reporting to the Federal Correctional Institution in Safford, Arizona.

According to reports, Michel surrendered to authorities on April 30, 2026, after receiving several court-approved delays earlier in the year. His arrival marks a major turn in a long-running legal case that has followed him for years.

Michel was convicted in 2023 on multiple serious charges, including money laundering, illegal lobbying, and campaign finance violations. Prosecutors argued that he acted as an unregistered foreign agent connected to the People’s Republic of China and that he used money linked to Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho to influence U.S. government decisions.

His spokesperson, Erica Dumas, described the moment as emotional and difficult for his family, saying it is a painful chapter for everyone involved and for those who believe in fairness in the justice system. She also shared that Michel spent his final days before reporting to prison quietly with family, keeping a low profile and focusing on personal discipline, including his vegan lifestyle.

Despite beginning his sentence, Michel’s legal team is still fighting the case. His lawyers say they strongly disagree with the conviction and are continuing the appeals process, arguing that key parts of the case were unfair and should be reviewed again in court.

Michel’s legal and personal journey has also been closely followed due to his long music career. He was part of The Fugees’ reunion tour in 2023, although tensions reportedly grew later between him and bandmates Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean. At one point, Michel even filed a lawsuit against Hill, which was later dropped earlier this year.

As he begins his sentence, the case continues to draw attention for its mix of music history, politics, and international controversy, marking a major fall for one of hip-hop’s once most influential groups.
