Despite the shocking security incident at a Washington dinner over the weekend, US President Donald Trump says the planned state visit by King Charles III will go ahead as scheduled.
The incident unfolded at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where chaos broke out after an armed suspect tried to force his way into the venue. The event was quickly evacuated, with Trump and other senior officials rushed to safety.
But even with the tension still fresh, Trump insisted the visit is still on. Speaking after the incident, he described the King as “a great guy” and said he’s looking forward to hosting him in the US, adding that the relationship between the two nations remains strong.
Behind the scenes, however, security is now under review.
Buckingham Palace confirmed that UK and US officials are in constant communication, reassessing operational planning following Saturday’s events. Officials stressed that security arrangements are already tight, but are now being reviewed “in light of recent developments.”
UK Cabinet Minister Darren Jones also confirmed that both governments are working closely to ensure the visit is fully secure, with further talks ongoing ahead of the trip.
The UK government and Downing Street have also expressed support following the incident, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemning the attack and calling it a threat to democratic values. He also spoke directly with Trump, offering solidarity and wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.
The suspect, identified as a 31-year-old man from California, has been arrested and is facing multiple charges. Authorities say he acted alone.
Despite the disruption, the state visit remains highly significant. It is expected to mark major diplomatic moments between the UK and US, including high-level talks, ceremonial events, and public appearances involving both leaders and their partners.
For now, both governments are moving forward, but with a clear focus on one thing: security first.
