A federal judge in New York has ordered the unsealing of a document reportedly linked to the death of financier Jeffrey Epstein, nearly seven years after he was found dead in prison.
The handwritten note, described by officials as a possible suicide note, was released on Wednesday by Judge Kenneth Karas as part of ongoing legal proceedings surrounding Epstein’s case. However, the document’s authenticity has not been independently verified.
According to court records, the note was allegedly discovered in July 2019 after Jeffrey Epstein was found unconscious in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York, weeks before his death.
The contents of the note reference earlier investigations into him, with statements suggesting frustration over the outcomes of those probes. It also includes reflective remarks about choosing one’s time to say goodbye, along with short underlined phrases such as “NO FUN” and “NOT WORTH IT!!”.
Prosecutors confirmed that the U.S. Department of Justice had not previously reviewed the document before it was brought into the court process.
A former cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione, told reporters he discovered the note hidden inside a graphic novel after Epstein had been removed from the cell following what authorities described as a suspected suicide attempt. He later passed it on to his legal representatives, and the document became part of a sealed legal dispute for years.
Jeffrey Epstein was found dead on 10 August 2019. The New York medical examiner officially ruled the death a suicide, although the circumstances surrounding it continue to generate public debate, speculation, and conspiracy theories.
