MASSOB Declares May 30 Biafra Day, Announces South-East Sit-at-Home

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, popularly known as MASSOB, has declared May 30, 2026, as Biafra Day and announced a sit-at-home across the South-East region in remembrance of the declaration of Biafra in 1967.

The group said the exercise is part of activities marking the 59th anniversary of the Biafra declaration by late leader Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

In a statement issued by MASSOB’s National Director of Information, Edeson Samuel, the organisation disclosed that markets, schools, banks, motor parks, and other business activities across the region are expected to remain closed from 6am to 4pm on May 30.

According to the group, the sit-at-home is meant to honour those who lost their lives during the Nigerian civil war and to promote what it described as a peaceful and non-violent struggle for self-determination.

MASSOB also renewed calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, describing his continued detention as unjust.

The group insisted that participation in the sit-at-home would be voluntary, stressing that nobody would be forced or intimidated into complying with the directive.

It further stated that there would be no public protests, demonstrations, rallies, or processions during the anniversary activities.

MASSOB, however, alleged that security agencies, including the military, police, DSS, and Civil Defence, may deploy heavily across major South-East cities during the commemoration.

Despite this, the organisation maintained that the agitation for Biafra would continue regardless of pressure or intimidation.
