Popular Nigerian comedian Ayo Makun, widely known as AY, has opened up about the heartbreaking final moments of late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo following his death after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Alex Ekubo reportedly passed away in a Lagos hospital on Monday, May 11, 2026, after complications linked to liver cancer. The actor had been diagnosed with stage four liver cancer in 2024 and later underwent a liver transplant in a bid to recover.
However, sources close to the family revealed that the transplanted liver failed again earlier this year, leading to severe health complications. He eventually died hours after being placed on life support.
Reacting to the tragic loss, AY shared an emotional tribute on Instagram, revealing that he was present at the hospital during Alex’s final moments. According to the comedian, the actor still had a smile on his face before he passed away.
“Some losses do not feel real no matter how many times you try to process them. Still struggling with the reality that you are gone, Alex,” AY wrote.
He added that their friendship, memories, and years of brotherhood in the entertainment industry made the loss even more painful.
“I was there. I saw you still smiling even in death. I saw the tears from friends and family. And honestly, a part of me is still in shock. Rest well my brother. You will be remembered beyond the lights, the cameras, and the fame,” he stated.
Meanwhile, actor Godwin Nnadiekwe also paid tribute to Alex Ekubo, revealing that the late actor had already prepared his will before his death.
In a post shared on his Instagram story, Godwin expressed heartbreak over the situation, writing: “Alex Ekubo. To think you already prepared your will, it’s a heartbreak I can’t quite describe. Rest well, my friend.”
