South African singer MaWhoo has sparked heated debate online after revealing that she was allegedly rejected by NSFAS during her earlier academic journey due to a low APS score.
The award-winning artist made the comments in a circulating clip shared on X, where she reflected on her education and early struggles before fame. In the video, MaWhoo insisted that she performed well in school but was unable to secure financial support for her studies.
“I did really well in school. People often say I don’t have a matric certificate, but that’s not true,” she said, adding that she was later denied funding at the university level due to her academic points.
Her remarks quickly went viral, with many social media users questioning the accuracy of her claims and debating how student funding actually works.
Some users argued that NSFAS does not base funding decisions on APS scores alone, but rather on financial need and acceptance into accredited institutions, while others dismissed her statement entirely as misleading.
In her interview, MaWhoo also opened up about her personal journey, revealing that she briefly studied teaching but dropped out in her second year before eventually returning to school at her mother’s insistence.
She explained that her life took a major turn when she received a direct message from music producer DJ Maphorisa, which led to a breakthrough in her music career. According to her, the opportunity came after a friend reached out on her behalf, requesting a collaboration.
Beyond her career, MaWhoo also spoke emotionally about her upbringing, saying she was raised by a single mother without a father figure, a background she says shaped her resilience and outlook on life.
The resurfaced comments have continued to divide opinion online, with supporters defending her personal experience while critics insist that her statements about NSFAS are inaccurate.
